Laparoscopy: A Minimally Invasive Diagnostic and Treatment Option at Aanvi Fertility and Women’s Centre
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is often used for both diagnostic and treatment purposes. It allows IVF and fertility specialists to examine a woman’s reproductive organs in great detail.
The procedure involves inserting a laparoscope—a thin tube with a camera, similar to a telescope—through a small incision near the belly button. This allows specialists to closely observe the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and other nearby organs. In certain cases, laparoscopy can be an alternative to traditional open surgery.
At Aanvi Fertility and Women’s Centre, Dr. Swarna, a leading IVF and fertility expert in Tilaknagar, uses laparoscopy to diagnose and treat various reproductive conditions. It is commonly recommended when other diagnostic methods, like X-rays or ultrasounds, fail to identify the underlying issue.
Diagnostic Laparoscopy at Aanvi Fertility and Women’s Centre
Dr. Swarna uses diagnostic laparoscopy for a variety of conditions, including:
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Excision of tissue masses
- Infertility in both men and women
- Pelvic infections
- Ovarian cysts
- Tubal ligation
- Hysterectomy
Laparoscopic Surgery Procedure
Laparoscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia. Here’s how the procedure works:
- Incision: A small incision is made below the belly button.
- Trocar Insertion: A hollow tube (trocar) is inserted through the incision, and carbon dioxide gas is pumped into the abdomen to expand the area, allowing the surgeon a better view and more room to work.
- Laparoscope Insertion: A laparoscope is then guided through the trocar to examine the organs. Additional incisions may be made if more instruments are needed.
- Dye Injection (for gynecological procedures): A dye may be injected into the cervix to help the surgeon visualize the fallopian tubes.
- Completion: After the exam or surgery is completed, the instruments are removed, and the incisions are closed and bandaged.
Recovery After Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy typically requires a shorter recovery time compared to open surgery, and it leaves smaller scars. While some discomfort is expected, patients generally experience mild shoulder pain due to the carbon dioxide used during the procedure.
- Post-Surgery Care: Patients can typically return to work after 3 days.
- Bandage Care: The bandages can be removed the day after surgery, and steri-strips, if used, can be removed after 2-3 days.
- Urine Colour: If the procedure was used to examine the fallopian tubes, the urine may appear green due to the dye used, but this will normalise soon.
- Vaginal Bleeding: Some vaginal bleeding may occur for up to a month, and patients may experience heavier bleeding and discomfort during their next menstrual cycle
- Resumption of Activity: Patients can resume sexual activity approximately a week after the surgery.
